From Himalayan Rock Salt to Finished Products
Himalayan pink salt products begin as rock salt extracted from salt deposits in Pakistan. The finished product depends on the intended use: edible salt is processed differently from lamps, cooking plates or decorative pieces.
1. Selecting and sorting the raw rock
Rock salt is inspected and sorted according to appearance, size and the intended product. Material destined for food use needs appropriate food-grade handling and quality controls; decorative-grade material is not automatically suitable for consumption.
2. Cleaning and size reduction
For edible products, processing may include cleaning, crushing or milling to the target particle size. Fine salt and coarse salt are then graded to achieve a more consistent specification. Any washing, drying or other treatment depends on the producer’s process and product requirements.
3. Making shaped products
Large, sound pieces may be selected for lamps, candle holders, cooking plates, tiles or decorative objects. Skilled cutting, drilling, grinding and polishing create the required shape and finish. Natural variations in colour, veining and dimensions are common in rock salt.
4. Quality checks and packaging
Before purchase, buyers should confirm product grade, dimensions or particle size, net weight, packaging material, labelling, breakage tolerance and any destination-market requirements. Food products should have suitable traceability and documentation for the intended market.
Questions to ask a supplier
- Is the product edible food grade or decorative grade?
- What size, colour range and tolerances can be supplied?
- What retail, bulk or private-label packaging is available?
- Which test reports and export documents can be provided?
